Other things Deborah is mixed up with:
Nomad PressThis independent press publishes books about traditional knitting and spinning techniques for contemporary people who want to develop their skills in these crafts. Titles include Knitting in the Old Way, and Simple Socks, both by Priscilla Gibson-Roberts, and Arctic Lace and Ethnic Knitting Discovery by Donna Druchunas. Gibson-Roberts, who has spent a lifetime mastering traditional textile techniques, established the press and Deborah has since assumed responsibility for its continuation. These are labors of love.
The Independent Stitch, Deborah's blog. Knitting, spinning, and other textile crafts, plus independent publishing and other thoughts about books and creativity.
The American Livestock Breeds ConservancyThis public-benefit group works to prevent the loss of endangered and unrecoverable resources that have taken thousands of years to develop. Rare breeds of domestic livestock embody genetic combinations humanity needs in order to solve environmental, cultural, and economic problems. Browse the sitewere especially fond of the fainting goat, the Mammoth Jackstock, and all of the sheep.
Sitka Symposium, The Island Institute, AlaskaIn daily life, people think about values in bits and pieces. During the Sitka Symposium, participants think these kinds of Big Thoughts for an entire week. Brains get tired, but also recharged for the other fifty-one weeks. Its fun, too!
More ideas in action:
High Country NewsIndependent publications and bookstores grow increasingly valuable and interesting. Check out this stalwartly idiosyncratic biweekly newspaper. A good source for information about the Rocky Mountains and surrounding areas, focused on how to live well within these landscapes.
And the not-so-profound:
The T.W.I.N.K.I.E.S. ProjectA great way to get a grip again when youre feeling overworked. Uh, educational, too. . . .

Everson Typography Home PageMany of the worlds languages are vanishing (along with the thought patterns they represent) through dependence on a few dominant tongues. Among his other pursuits, Michael Everson designs typefaces for some of the rare languagesan important step in maintaining them. Take a look at his work. Consider supporting a local language, and learning at least part of a neighboring or farflung one.
