Current writing projects
Although I earned an MFA in fiction writing in the long-ago and have completed
a story collection (plus a novel, an essay collection, and a childrens
book that stay on my shelf), I am captivated by creative nonfiction. I write
some short fiction, but mostly Ive switched to the essay.
| Many (but not all) of my current essays cohere around two themes: | |

Reaching my fifties and having (or seizing) the freedom to pursue my own creative work again. The decision to dive headlong into passions slowly nurtured for so many years is daunting, and this work addresses, in part, the tension between two crucial impulses: to be financially responsible and to honor both my creative spirit and the knowledgemaybe wisdomIve gathered. When I have a chance, I plan to add a sample essay or two on this topic to this site. |

The challenge of successfully raising a child who doesnt fit the profile for which our current educational system has been designed, and for whom that system became destructive. These essays examine the experiences my daughter and I had during her first thirteen years of schooling. She is an exceptionally bright person who has learning disabilities that masked her intelligence. Her story illustrates the importance of the educational change Mel Levine argues for in A Mind at a Time. She is thriving as a young adult, but only because we took risks and paid prices that no family should have to sustain in a country whose laws require the school system to educate all children and require parents to send their children to school. If you are interested in looking at a sample essay from this area,
please check back after the next update. |
| And every few years I temporarily locate the vast quantities of brain space necessary to write a poem or two. | |
