Freelance interpretive planner, researcher, designer, editor, and writer
June 2000 to present. I have worked for nonprofit, commercial, and government organizations, as well as individuals. Developmental editing, technical editing, copyediting, design and layout. Four-color, one-color, and intermediate formats; web and sheetfed. As of May 2005, because of commitments to Nomad Press and Dogtooth Books, I’m working only on occasional projects uniquely suited to my skills and interests.
Interweave Press, Loveland, Colorado
Editor and publication designer, 1986June 2000. I edited and designed books and magazines for an independent publishing house that specializes in textile crafts, natural living, and herbs. My primary (but not only) job involved the conception and production of a full-color magazine called Spin-Off: The Magazine for Handspinners. The magazine averaged 132 pages per quarterly issue, with about 60 percent editorial pages. From 1987 to 2000, the print run per issue grew from 10,000 to about 27,000.
Handweavers Guild of America, West Hartford, Connecticut
Editor, 19851986. I edited SS&D, a quarterly, full-color magazine serving an audience of weavers, spinners, and dyers, published by a nonprofit organization. The magazine averaged 96 pages, with about 66 percent editorial pages, and a print run of around 15,000.
University of Massachusetts Press, Amherst, Massachusetts
Production editor, 19801981. I worked with the book designer and production manager, Mary Mendell. She did the visuals, I did the words, and we produced about twenty-two titles a year.
University of Massachusetts Press
Literary magazines
In Seattle and Port Townsend, Washington, and in western Massachusetts, I edited literary magazines, including Assay, The Port Townsend Journal, and Swift River.
