Deborah Robson
Editorial summary, magazines
My experience includes literary magazines as well as full-color quarterlies with combined newsstand and subscription readerships. I enjoy maximizing the impact of black-and-white design, and specialize in the judicious use of four-color and spot-color images.
| Spin-Off: The Magazine for Handspinners. Editor. Published by Interweave Press, Loveland, Colorado. |
|
Forty-nine
issues, quarterly, Spring 1988 through Spring 2000. |
|
A
full-color web-printed publication. |
|
The
magazine is distributed by subscription and on newsstands in North America,
Australia, New Zealand, and Europe. |
|
I
filled all editorial functions, except one pass of proofreading, including:
acquisitions, development, substantive and line editing, copyediting,
technical review, project coordination, supervision of illustrations
and photostyling, design, and layout. |
|
I
coordinated closely with the advertising, marketing, and final production
departments. |
|
When
I assumed responsibility, issues averaged 72 pages (saddlestitched);
6,700 subscribers; print runs of 10,000; and 30 percent ads. |
|
When
I handed over responsibility to my assistant and became editor emeritus,
issues averaged 132 to 140 pages (perfectbound); 13,000 subscribers;
print runs of 27,000; newsstand distribution of 13,000; and 43 to 45
percent ads. |
|
| Shuttle Spindle & Dyepot (SS&D). Editor. Published by the Handweavers Guild of America, West Hartford, Connecticut.* |
|
Four
issues, quarterly, Winter 1985 through Fall 1986. |
|
A
full-color web-printed publication. |
|
The
magazine is distributed primarily through subscription (membership in
nonprofit organization). I provided all editorial functions and supervised
the design, typesetting, and production staff. |
|
| * Editorial styling notes: The magazines title does not contain a comma and the organizations name has no apostrophe. | |
| Literary magazines I have edited and designed, in full or in part, have included Swift River (two-color production, sheetfed, fine-print quality, two issues), The Port Townsend Journal (hand silkscreen and mimeograph production, three issues), and Assay (University of Washington graduate school publication, sheetfed, one issue). | |
